Climbing the Shmuch Kamine in the Kaisergebirge from Richard McHardy

Created by Tom 4 years ago
Four of us arrive in the Kaisergebirge about 2 a clock, really sunny warm day.  Set off to the Stripsenjoch hut with big sacks.  The path becomes a series of steep zig zags. Seemed a good idea to hide the sacks do a route and pick the sacks up later in the cool evening.  We set off in too the Steinerne Rinne.  I had a yen to do the Shmuch Kamine, Herman Bhul had fallen off it years before and it had not had a British ascent. At the top of the climb we arrived on the ridge that leads to the Summit the Sun was a big red ball rapidly disappearing. to go over the summit and down the normal route was out of the question in the fading light so we went down the ridge. Near the bottom we had to do two really dodgy abseils in complete darkness. The hut warden of the Stripsenjoch heard us shouting to each other and stayed up to wait. It was now about midnight and the hut was completely dark and without a sound.  He generously offered us a free brew.  Black coffee, unbelievable I was so chuffed, then Doug asked for milk.  He went nutty.
